I mean, an average person breaks up 13 times before getting married, and 20% of all married couples get divorced. I think that it's just crazy how you can't return a pair of used jeans to a store after 4 months, but you can just toss your partner out like yesterday's garbage after years of marriage or dating.

Only 20% of all marriages end in divorce you say?
That's quite good then, as I'm sure it's a lot more than that in the UK. I'm sure I heard recently that the length of the average marriage in the UK has recently risen, but still far away from til death.

Found it up from 11.3 to 11.5 years.

I think that divorce should be easier, (far too many children are at the center of bitter divorce battles); but that getting married should be made a lot harder. I don't think it is possible to stay happily married for life; well for most people anyway.

Well look at it this way, usually those many breakups are in between 2-3 years. I believe it takes 3 years to know a person before you know if you want to marry or be with them for the rest of your life. You can be with as many people as you want it's just that if you think that the person you are with is the one you want to be with make sure you are with them for at least 3 years before you decide you want to marry or be with this person. And usually marriages don't last because they marry for the childrens sake. This makes the childs life worse if they are arguing all the time. And this is comming from a guy that has only one girlfriend

I don't think most people toss out their partners like "yesterday's garbage". I know it happens, and I feel bad for those people. But lots of people also take dating very seriously. Breakups are hard.

It's impossible to know if someone will ALWAYS be right for you. This is why people DO break up and they DO get divorced. Maybe you're absolutely sure about someone, but you can't predict the future, and something might happen. It's impossible to know.

Well I think the category suits this question, because so many songs are about this very thing! I have no answers. I think I've broken up more than 13 times but I've never been fool enough to marry anyone.

I don't think is the country, it's because of the inability of our generation to maintain a balance between work life, love life and the worries of both. Money and psychological problems are a big issue that do start a lot of the fights in couples.

american culture in general has become very disposable: out with the old, in with the new. . . and the new is happening faster and faster. the minute a relationship becomes work, people want out. yes, it's a problem. unfortunately, much of society has adopted a very warped way of thinking about dating, marriage and many other important concepts. it's sad. . .who knows what it will lead to?

Yeah i know, that is so sad. But it does make you think. Do we just have abnormally high standards or is there something deeper which is wrong with us? Oh well, i suppose there is always hope.
