No contest - XP... but want to read a good discussion on the subject? Check out:

Anyone saying XP home is like 98 is SOOOOO Far off.... it's like saying a motorized scooter is like a harley motorcycle. Under the hood, they are SOOOO different, it's not funny. The differences allow for MUCH better graphics performance under XP and FAR, FAR more reliability (you'd be lucky to get 98 under ideal circumstances to last a week without having to reboot... you can get XP to last MONTHS in MOST circumstances.
CASEY - Define "Crash" Blue Screen of death? Lock up where the mouse won't move at all? Those are the only two SYSTEM crashes you really can experience... anything else is a crash of a particular program and if you wait long enough (minutes) 999 times out of 1000, the computer will return to a running state. This was not the case with 98.

Well I'm on a '98 computer right now, and I can tell you that hardware and software have both left that OS in the dust. . .so it's definitely easier to use XP. Now, at least. Back when they both received near-equal support, I liked 98 better, because it doesn't seem to crash as often.

all saying obviously haven't thought about it too well so let me brake it down.
if your computer has less the 16mb of ram do not i repeat do not upgrade as most of the windows xp programs require 64 mb of ram for a minimum. if your looking for a new computer go for windows xp home but if you have got an old computer and just looking for an upgrade i tell you now know this it may be the worst thing that you could ever do............

Windows XP is better. Most of the time you won't notice it.
XP is a Big Pig. get yourself 256mb or 512mb of ram.
why better:
1. real os . not "environment" - based on WinNT/Win2000
2. multitasking better - run more stuff concurrently
3. handles large amounts of memory better
4. supports modern computers and modern software
5. usb support far superior
