My mother has a 1989 Buick LaSabre where the engine light comes on and then it will stall. Do you have any idea what is going on here?

Your signs are a bit vague, but here is a start.
First step, draw the codes from the computer's library.
For a clear description for this procedure,
go here------>

http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troubleshooting/l/bl_dtcs_01.htm

Use a paperclip to jump across "A" & "B" in the connector.
Each code will flash 3 times, then go on to the next code. When it begins to flash a "12" again, all codes have been displayed.

NOTE----VERY IMPORTANT The codes displayed represent malfunction(s) in a system or circuit, NOT NECESASARILY the component.
After retrieving the codes, use a repair manual available at your local parts store, or at your local library as a diagnostic aid.
Follow the prescribed diagnostic procedure rather than merely throw ing parts at the problem.
It MAY only be a loose connection and not a defective component.
Some codes direct you to a circuit, but that circuit only monitors a system, and it is actually pointing you to a problem.

Good Luck

My first thought is the catalytic converter may be clogged. but considering the age of the car, it could be several different things. It could be something as simple as the fuel filter and it might be the fuel pump. It's really hard to say. If I were you, I'd think about checking the small things first (fuel filter) then if that isnt the problem, try the catalytic converter. Good luck!!
