they are not the same thing, fruit fly is also known as drosophilia melanogaster and used widely in genetic and biology experiments.
but no idea how to get rid of them

Gnat is a far funnier word. Gnat. G-nat! Ha-ha!

I think they're about the same thing--same family, anyway, but they eat different stuff. Maybe get a fly strip or something. Or a friendly spider. Or smack them. They're not as gross as regular flies, but they're not cool, either.

I think "fruit fly" is just a derogatory name for a homosexual gnat.
