independent variable means that the variable stands alone. it does not DEPEND on another variable to make it important or to accomplish a goal.

Ex. 1
y=3x+27

the "y" is depending on the "x" to help find it's value, but the "x" is just there to help bring "value" to the "y"

Independent Variable- Factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes; also known as a responding variable.

The independent variable is the one that will cause a change in the dependent variable. Such as temperature affecting the gender of aligators while in their eggs.
I always looked at it as cause and effect. Independent being the cause and dependent being the effect.
