A bare metal rack in a microwave can not be! it has to be coated with something that the microwaves do not spark when it hits the rack. and my guess is so you can microwave more then 1 or 2 thing at the same time

It is for more than one item. The metallic racks do appear to be equipped with a surface coating to prevent Arcing; But be aware. If the coating wears away in a very small area on the rack and that area is in contact with the walls, It will arc big time and damage the interior wall.

Are you sure it's not a toaster oven? Microwave Ovens don't play well with metal. In fact, they get very upset when you put metal in them. Shoot lightning bolts.
