You quadruple the cost of the repair, after taking into consideration the cost of the rim, a new tire, and who knows what other damage.

There is only one excuse for driving with a flat, and that is if you are in a dangerous place, and would feel vulnerable if pulled over. Call the local police and ask for assistance in that case, along with your roadside assistance provider if you have one.

Driving On Flat Tire Damage

It depends how far you drive. Initially, the structure of the tire will support the weight of the car. The first level of failure is the separation of the tread from the core. Once separation occurs, the integrity of the tire is gone and you'll need to replace it. Continue driving on it and you'll start to tear the rubber. Eventually the stress of the rim will rip apart the tire and the rim will make contact with the asphalt. The shape of the rim won't be affected but the smooth bead will become sharp and irregular. At that point, the rim is still salvageable. Continue rolling on it and it'll begin to flatten out. At this point, the rim is shot but you can still get to where you're going, provided your speed is slow. Go too fast and you'll begin to heat the rim to a point of it igniting the rubber still flopping around.

If there was any indication of how far you can go, I knew a guy in college who drove about 50 miles on three tires. The rim looked like a racing slick - it was completely smooth. How he made it back without going "flame on" is beyond me.
