Okay this is what an acronym is .. You see a file name Vanessa.exe, or Vanessa.com, or Vanessa.bmp, those .exe,.com,.bmp, are short versions of the full name.
EXE is short for Executable
COM is short for Command
BMP is short for Bitmap

Or more like an abbreviation for a word (Yeah this one is clearer)
I too asked this question when I was study for A++ Certification, hope this helps.
