The reasoning is wrong! If the discount is 3 dollars, you have to add it back to the 27. So 27 plus 3, makes 30! It doesn't matter the other 2 dollars. The owner could had given 10 dollars back and the bellboy keeping 7 for himself. It would be still the same real discount of 3!

It never was an issue. The hotel has only $25, the result of taking $5 to return from the $30. The men have $1 each, or $3 of the $5. The bell boy has a $2 tip. Whoever thought up this problem is a good candidate to be a politician! That's how they think!

Where did the +2 come from? The Manger still has it from the $5 discount and only gave them $3? The men paid $27 for the room or $9 each.

Room = 30
Disc. = -3
Total = 27

Are you trying to say the +2 (the remainder of the discount) was added on to the original total? It wasn't.

Why is this in earth sciences and Geology??

Its a problem of logic at best and of poorly understood math at worst.
