Suppose his money was x
the man spent 1/3 x
the remainder is 2/3 x
then he he lost 2/3 of 2/3 x which is 4/9 x
4/9 x is the money which he has finally =12 dollar
so 4/9 x=12 then x=9*12/4=27 dollars the original money.

Just work backwards and think...12 is 1/3 of 36 ...so if he had 36, lost 2/3 he would have 12....now part one of the question...he spent 1/3 to end up with 36....so 36 is 2/3rds of what number? well 18 x 1 is 18, x 2 is 36 and x 3 is 54....so the answer is he had 54, you can double check by saying he lost 1/3 (18) he would be down to 36 and so on...,,,,I am NOT a teacher by any means, but it is pretty simple if you just think it thru..hope this helped

Well the $12 he has is 1/3 of what he had previously so to get that total you would mulitply it by 3. This total is is now 2/3 of what he had when this all started so take your current total and add it by half. So it should look like : 3x + (3x/2)= total when he started x=12 You still need to do the math.

If x is his starting money
then 2x/3 is what he had after spending 1/3
(2x/3)*1/3 =12 is what we know after he lost 2/3 of the remainder

Sove for x:
2x/9=12
x/9=6
x=54

ok. Man had $x.
He spent one-third, so now he has 2/3 left. right?
so he has 2/3x
Now he looses 2/3 of 2/3x
so 1/3(2/3x)
so now he has 2/9x
2/9x=12
2x=9×12
x=108/2
x=54.

I believe that is the answer. but to check. simply do the same but instead of using x use 54.
2/3x=36
1/3(2/3x)=12
