The rape of Indigenous women was commonplace during the conquest of the Americas. Even Columbus wrote in his diary that he raped an Indigenous woman. Columbus also knew that he could control his lieutenants by providing women for them. He wrote that his lieutenants preferred girls around ten years old.

Stannard writes that this behavior reflects the "demonstration of power and the degredation of both the victims and her loved ones."

How did the rape of Indigenous women and children reflect power and control over all Indigenous People?

Through-out history, rape has been a mainstay of conquering a new land. The theory is that if the offspring look like you they will be less likely to revolt. This is the case in virtually every society. It works best if you kill the young children as well.
