The purpose of homework is to extend and reinforce the various concepts taught in class or those to be discussed in class. The problem is not the amount of homework assigned as much as the lack of coordination on the part of teachers in assigning it, so that the amount is distributed reasonably among all of the subjects being studied. Then students would not be overwhelmed one night and have little to do the next. Coordination CAN be done by teaming teachers and students in high school. In order for that to happen, the needs of kids and NOT of faculty and administration need to be the priority.

To make sure you don't have a life. To me homework is students doing at home what the teacher should have been doing in class. Basically they are getting paid for nuttin.

It's simple.
The purpose of homework is to do HOME WORK. It's for a student to practice what they have learned in class and then apply it to everyday life.

Homework is simply a tool that helps students to learn outside of class time. It can ask students to review what they learned, such as new vocabulary words. It can ask students to practice concepts or techniques, such as by doing math problems, or doing essays. It can even be used to ask students to learn or begin to learn new ideas, e.g. by assigning the next chapter of a textbook as reading.
