It really depends on what state you live in. I used to teach traffic school in Florida. It depends also on the traffic infraction.
Leaving the scene of an accident - 6 points
Unlawful speed resulting in an accident - 6 points
Reckless Driving - 4 points
Any moving violation resulting in an accident - 4 points
Passing a stopped school bus - 4 points
16 mph or more over the lawful posted speed limit - 4 points
15 mph or less over the lawful posted speed limit - 3 points
All other moving violations - 3 points

if you get 12 points within a 12 month period, suspension of license for 30 days.

18 points within an 18 month period, license will be suspended for 3 months.

24 points within a 36 month period, license will be suspended for 1 year

The points received for a traffic violation will be taken off your driving record 3 years after the date of citation or, they will be taken off after taking a Basic Driver Education course (Traffic School)

Hope this helps you....and these rules only apply in the state of Florida. They may vary in other states.

Hard for most anyone to answer this type of question, when you don't put what state you live in. Examples from other states accross the USA aren't going to help you at all. These laws are strictly by state, and not federal law. Check with your states registry. You can usually find them on line. Here in Ma., I have been a step 9 driver for years. The best you can have here. What did you do to lose points?
