Tampon manufacturers recommend no more than 8 hours, but do remember tampons are a risk from the moment you put them into your vagina, the longer you leave them in your vagina the greater the risk of vaginal splitting, infections, chemicals exposier and toxic shock syndrome.
Ideally if you are going to use tampons over safer options such as menstrual cups, which incidentally can be worn for 12 hours at a time if length of time you can wear a tampon is an issue for you, then go for safer tampon types such as organic, sponge or homemade tampons to limit risk.
Go for what it best for your flow, start by using the lightest absorbency and work up from there, ideally aim to change every 4 hours rather than every 8 to limit risks – bare in mind the longer you leave them in all the more unhygienic it is.
Edit - In reply to sindi a's answer, it is not ok to sleep with a tampon in. Apart from the fact that for most this means a long period of time without changing the tampon because gravity does not act to see menses flow down, thus the tampon absorbs more discharge rather than blood so increasing vaginal splitting.

I think 4 hours is better. Longer than that could result in a nasty infection as germs will follow that little string up into your body. Also you will not need to worry about offensive odor as much as if you wear the same tampon for 8 hours.

8 hours is the reccomended max for leaving a tampon in. Yes it's ok to do this, but sometimes you may need to change it more often depending on if your flow is heavy or not. But 8 hours is safe, dont stress.

My doctor has told me that it is fine to leave a tampon in for a maximum of eight hours. It can also be worn while sleeping. However, if you can, change them every 4-6 hours as it is better for your body. And it is also better not to sleep in them, but you can if you have to.

use the tampon that is the least absorbancy for 4 hours - changeing too often will result in irritation and waiting too long may cause infection and is just icky.

I have had a light one in for like 10+ hours and all is still well. So I would not worry. But I would not use a super one for very long.
