This question is trip.. and reading the answers were even better. I am white, and I have mixed adopted siblings. When my kids were little, they had no concept of race because of my family.. They did skin tones, like white, light brown, dark brown, etc.. and ya know what? I am white, and my kids said I was light brown.. cause I am not real fair complected. I have met fair skinned Hispanics. Personally I think the skin thing is too exaggerated... how about we all just not worry about it.
If all white people basked in the sun, day after day, they would be brown too. Please do not take offense to my answer...

Most of the Latino people in the United States today are a product of Spainiards from the Conquistador days mating with the South American Indians that they encountered back in the 15th century.
Spainiards are from Spain, the European country that you're thinking about. They are pale like most other Europeans.
Mexicans,Salvadorans,Guatamalans and most other South Americans are mostly descendants of Spanish and Portugese invaders mixed with Incan,Mayan, and Aztec natives. These South American Indians were the carriers of the darker pigments that are the reason for the brown skin tones.

Hispanic people come from all over and are all kinds of mixes. For example, my mother's grandparents came from Spain and France, there's even some Scottish and German in the family, but she was born and raised in Mexico and she's as white as any Daughter of the American Revolution... if not whiter. She can't even really tan. She tends to burn.
I have Hispanic cousins that are blonde and blue-eyed or red-headed with freckles.
On my Dad's side, we're part Zapotec Indian (a tribe in Mexico) and so, yeah, that side is browner.
I would probably look "Hispanic" to you with my dark brown hair and brown eyes because I have a tan but that's because I'm outdoors a lot in the summer. Where the sun don't shine is lily white....
Every country has immigrants and so, depending on who immigrated to where and how the bloodlines mixed, we Hispanics come in all colors from albino white to seriously dark, LOL!

Because in Hispanic countries, when the Europeans arrived their was lots of mixture with all of the natives that were there. Did you really believe that Hispanic lands were uninhabited when the Europeans arrived??? Because if you truly believed that, then you are very ignorant (not making fun of you, but speaking the truth) Also, you must know that their is no country in the world that has not either been colonized, influenced or invaded by a European country.
Spain and Portugal have people who look hispanic because, 1000's of years ago there were what is now Middle Eastern people who lived there. Gosh why don't you pick up a history book and learn something. I could go on and on but I dont think that it should be my job to teach you something, you should try to learn on your own.

Typically, if they're Hispanic by way of a Western hemisphere country, they not just European, they also have some Native American in them. Someone straight out of Spain is going to be lighter, but when Hispanics settled in Central and South America, they began mixing with the native populations already there.

Because pigment of the skin is determined by the dominant ethnic composition.
Some white people have lineage that goes back to one or two of African or mixed, and yet the dominant pigment takes preference.
Same hold true for other races.
In reality, most "whites" are mixed with other races, while the dominant color is the "brown" you asked about.
It's a falacy when you are asked if you are white, black, asian or hispanic. Most of us are products of a little bit of each.

It is a multi-racial culture and everyone today comes from a mixed background. I'm as white as white comes even though I was born and raised in Puerto Rico.
Hispanics' roots are from Spanish, Native Indian, African slaves and Americans.
In my family there are members who have white, light brow, brown and black pigments and features.
We are not that different, you know!

Miss AMERICA,
because not everyone are white; if they are Hispanic they are brown; if they are from Europe they are not totally white, like Americans; that is the reason this world is a melting pot. your Majesty we're sorry to disappoint you.

I think that because of gentics and the sun
I am from Venezuela and I am brown. It is because I have flowing thru my veins, blood from black, white and indian people, because of my ancestors. Really I have black, white and Indian ancestors.
Nelly Furtado was raised in Canada, so you know, the cold weather etc. And even though, she isn't completly white, she a little brown.
