if it takes 5 men 2 1/2 days to dig a hole, and 3 men 4 1/2 days to dig a hole, how long would it take 2 men to dig half a hole?

Certain things to consider. One of the men was a part of the original crew and he has worked 7 days already....he's not going to get more overtime so he is sent home. So the question is how long for 1 man to dig half a hole. We have to include one 10 minute break after 2 hours work and a 30 minute lunch after 6 hours. Given that he spent 45 minutes in the bathroom from last nights pizza and beer, I would calculate that it takes 3 days to dig the hoIe..I would guess it is his own grave.

First call m = # of men and d = # of days. So, you have the following equations. 5m=5/2d and 3 m=9/2 day. Solve for m in either case. I pick 5m=5/2 d. Multiply 1/5 to each side m =5/2*1/5=1/2. So m=1/2 d. So 2 m=1 day.
