Like at the nail shop when the girls speak chinese or at the braid shop when the girls speak some african languages or in the elevator when people speak spanish. I mean I don't have a proeblem with people embracing their culture, but is it rude when they do it around others and as not to include you in conversations. I know if I'm sitting in a chair for 12 hours getting braids done, I think it's rude for them not to talk to me and only speak swahili or something.

It's not all about them talking about you. I don't care if a person talks about me in english, like Kimberly C, but it just seems kind of rude when they don't even try and communicate with you. If that's the only language you speak, understandable, but if you speak english as clear as I do, why sit in my face and speak another language. I mean it's boring enough sitting a nail or braid shop as it is, LOL.
And for the guy who says what do you expect from minimum wage workers...Many people of different nationalities may make more then you. Don't assume everyone is poor. This is not a racist question or a reason for racist to answer. this is just something that I want to know.

Yes, it is rude to not include everyone in the group in the conversation, whether because of language, inside jokes, shared past experiences or for any other reason.

Nope. I don't think it's rude. People feel more comfortable speaking their own language sometimes. Plus, if they're talking about something personal or that doesn't interest you, even if they were speaking in english they wouldn't include you in their conversation.
You could start a conversation yourself and then I'm sure they'll talk to you. And yeah it is a little rude to ignore you for 12 hours, but again the problem is not in the language.

oh my god, I can't tell you how rude that is!
I live in South Florida, which over the last 20 years has become North Cuba. My company is OVER 50% Cuban, as a plain old white guy, I am in the minority. There are few things more disrespectful than two Cubans speaking Spanish right in front of my face. And it wasn't just me. It got so that the company actually had to issue an official corporate policy that all company business must be conducted in English.
It doesn't stop them from doing it, but it does keep them in check a bit.

I don't find that rude. Of course it would be nicer if they spoke English and let you join the conversation, especially when you're stuck with them for a long time, but I don't think it's rude though to not do it. I don't mind when people speak a language I don't understand around me. To me it only becomes rude when they talk about you and you can't understand what they're saying.

I only feel offended when at the time I am presenting an idea to two persons who speak the same language that I don't and suddenly they will talk in their their native tongue leaving me wondering what they are talking about. In a barber shop or any place I am not involve in their discussions, I do not care even if they are talking about me as long as I do not understand it. I will just have to look around if someone is picking up something to hit my head with.

As an African I don't think it's rude because if it's what you're used to speaking then why not....sometimes I speak with my family members around other people because that's how we are used to communicating...it's not out of rudeness..it's just part of us..why do you think a lot of Hispanics speak Spanish amongst themselves, it's because that's how they communicate. There are certain things that you can't express in English but in my language so easily expressed.

Hmmmm, what language would you speak in Paris? Moscow? Tokyo? I dont mean to come off rudely, but you (painfully) obviously are monolingual, why don´t you learn another language and then see if you have the same take.
People communicate in their native language whenever they can (I speak English all the time to my wife even though I live in continental Europe but switch to French whenever I need to speak with someone else, it´s just more natural for us.)
Why do you want to know whatthey are saying, anyway? Do you think they are talking about you, lol!

Yes, it is rude but what do you expect from someone working for minimum wage? It's not like they've ever had a class in etiquette.
I used to have a boss that did that all the time. He'd speak Spanish even though he knew some of the employees didn't speak Spanish. I'd reply in English although I could reply in Spanish because it wasn't nice of him to do that.

I don't think its rude at all. I mean even if they were talking in English, what does THEIR conversation have to do with you? Would you have bud in rudely just because you knew what they were saying? I mean I don't speak anything beside English but I don't feel the need to bud into every conversation that goes on. One day you may hear something that you really don't want to and regret it.
