It sounds like you have a bacterial growing on your evaporator coil. This is somewhat common. I recommend calling an HVAC repairman and have them clean and treat your coil. By the way, if there was a dead creature in your unit, you would have the smell anytime the fan is running.

It needs servicing. Basically what is happening is that the water drain is clogged and the water is hanging up in it. Try to clear that first or get a service tech to come in and give it a general cleaning

yes the coils. febreeze works well and check for a plugged condensation line.some ac units have tech bulletins on how to fix the ummmmmmmm problem, but it sucks to have to call a repairman.
p.s. some auto, truck and tractor systems do this as well.

If it is a swamp cooler, the pads need to be changed. If it is an outside refrigerated air unit, something probably crawled up in it and died.
