Can someone please tell me how you get signed and where someone could go to have a record company hear you play? Do you have to have a lawyer to give a music studio a CD or could you just send them one? Please I need to know.

I totally agree it's a matter of luck mostly. I'm a musician myself and I always had to have another job and that's not because I'm not worth it (yeah, that's him telling... No, really!), just because there are so many people making music you really have to get lucky.
I'll tell you what though, regarding your question... Read this book: The Music Business (Explained in Plain English) by David Naggar, Esq. and Jeffrey D. Bradstetter, Esq.(Dajé Publishing) and don't let it get you down.
