A reasonable amount of homework is really necessary because of the information explosion in each of the areas studied, especially history, English, science, and mathematics. For example, students in 7th grade are now studying math that I did not have until my junior year in high school. Historical information has just become exponential in scope. Thus, the problem isn't really the homework itself as much as the AMOUNT of homework. There is no effort in schools to coordinate assignments and scheduling quizzes and tests, so students are inundated with homework one night and not another. They are apt to face 4-6 tests or quizzes all on the same day, especially Friday. I truly believe that teaming teachers and students in high school would provide the vehicle to coordinate all of these efforts. Too many teachers view their area as THE only important domain. Coordination would help bring them into reality and would help the kids.
I taught and was a high school principal for 40 years. Schools have changed VERY little during or since those 40 years, and change will NOT work unless and until schools deal with teacher isolation. Teaming is the answer!!

Disagree. Homework is an essential part of learning, regardless of whether teachers are actually teaching everything in class that they should be. Homework forces students to review lessons already learned, practice what they're being taught, or move ahead and start figuring out new concepts. It's true that some students receive many hours' worth of homework and must balance this with multiple extracurricular activities, but the basic question of whether homework makes kids smarter had the basic answer that, yes, it does.

You need all the practice you can get for classes. Practicing in math through homework helps students improve their math abilities. In fact, the more practice you get the smarter you are. However, I totally disagree with requiring kids to do homework. It should be an optional thing.

Neither. It annoys the hell out of me when teachers assign Mickey Mouse type homework. If doing the homework won't lead to anything productive, then it should not be assigned. However, it is very important that children learn to problem solve, which homework can help do.
I think children are involved in way too many extra-curricular activities, not allowing them enough time to do homework and to goof off for the hell of it. Parents need to schedule fewer activities for their children, rather than trying to live their life vicariously through them.

Disagree, the point of homework is to give students additional practice on certain material. By forcing them to spend more time with the material, in theory, students should gain a greater understanding and comprehension of the material. Education is not about students memorizing useless facts. Education is about gaining an understanding of the material you study. It is about knowing how and why, not simply being able to regurgitate facts. The more time a student spends with the material he is studying, the greater the change the student will understand the material.

I agree to an extent- homework is necessary to reinforce learning. But when kids are up till 11 pm every night doing homwork in elementary school when they started it as soon as they got home, it is hurting them. They do not get enough sleep and it hinders their performance/attention span in class the next day.

Agree. They pile on a lot of homework that doesn't thoroughly explain the material. It's just toying with the kids and making them pay a lot of attention to school, but what good is it doing?

I disagree. Homework is to make you think and learn and understand the subject. It also teaches discipline and punctuality. Important traits when you enter the work force.

I disagree. I'm a college student and as tedious as homework might seem, I always learn something from it. So...
