Depend on the job. If looks would contribute to the success/productivity of a job, then of course it would matter. Examples of such jobs: actors/actresses/models, marketing (who are doing the actual presentation to customers to win account, not who are preparing the material), hotels' receptionists, tour guides, ... For these jobs, looks (external appearance, including born features as well as attires/gesture, ...) would help contribute to the success of the job. There are plenty of other jobs though where looks might matter less. Examples of such jobs: telemarketers :-), many engineers/technical positions, many physician fields, ... Not to say that looks will not help there, it is just that the success of these jobs tend to depend on many other factors more so than on looks.
Your question though, on "landing" a job, is a difficult one. If the hiring manager is favoring "looks", of course looks would matter. But I have heard of hiring managers not keen on hiring "someone pretty"; then in such cases, looks would matter but in a bad way :-).

Brutal huh?!?
OK here goes. Looks don't "matter" per say, but having the looks factor on your side gives you immediate sell-ability. I believe, and this is of course my own "unbiased opinion", that a person who looks good AND has charm, personality, and is thoughtful to others COMBINED WITH an aura of self confidence (but not overly confident), would land any job over a slightly more skilled yet homely applicant.

Depends on the job. Lower-level jobs (those paying at or slightly above minimum wage), it'll make a minor difference. The higher the pay, the more looks matter.
When you apply for a job, you're marketing everything about yourself. One crucial way you do this is by your appearance. If you look bad, you're doing a poor job of selling yourself and the job will be that much harder to get.

You only get one chance to make a first impression. That impression is made by the first look an employer has of the person applying for the job and it doesn't really matter how good your resume looked on a piece of paper. A neat and clean and appearance and clothing appropriate for the position you are applying for is very important.

Looks do matter, especially a clean, neat look. You don't need to be a Miss America to land a job. Be relaxed, articulate and ace the interview. Tone down the makeup and hair do. No jangling jewelry or dangling earrings.

i'm in a similar place to you. I purely began my first quite pastime as a dishwasher in a eating place, and that i'm nevertheless in school. I additionally get sturdy grades clearly, yet i found that I conflict somewhat protecting up with the workload at artwork. places like that purposely bigger novices like me so as that they could get a minimum of a few artwork adventure, and that i could say it is going to help me very much interior the long-term. many roles require sturdy grades and adventure, yet sturdy grades on my own isn't well worth lots, until they are prepared to coach you.

looks matter all through life, if someone is knocking at your door, what do you do? you look at them and start judging the situation from then on, if they look like escape convicts you do one thing, if they look like mormons with bibles in hand, and little child with them, you do (usually) another thing. Everyone judges everyone at least in part on their looks, you have to until you learn more.
