Could be your back-up/neutral saftey Switch is bad. This switch is located on the brake pedal( if automatic). Sometimes vehicles have overrides around the gear shift, you typically need to stick your key in it. Also check to make sure the steering wheel is not locked.

OK. Assuming that you have not just jammed the parking pawl by parking against a curb or on a steep hill there may be another problem.
If the shifter moves some, but the car stays in park, the problem may be a broken shift cable (or link). Replacing the broken part puts you back in service.
Unless you know how, car must be towed with drive wheels off the ground to your mechanic.

Is this car parked on a hill? The parking pawl is probably wedged in and you might need a tow truck to push it up so you can release it. Next time use the parking brake before you park on a hill. Hope this helps.

I HAD a car that did that and the problem was inside the shifter is a lock and it needs to be broken off because it is not working, or u can just replace but its much easier to break it off , but the only problem with that is u won't need to put your foot on the brake to change it anymore so if u have small kids that might get ahold of it then i would advise just replacing it
BTW its the lock that releases when u put your foot on the brake

have someone "rock" the car while you attempt to shift it out of park. What has most likely happened is you parked against a curb or on a hill and the park pin is stuck because of the pressure.

You might have someone nudge you with a vehicle from behind, wiggle the steering wheel, while trying to get the sucker out of park. Make sure the ignition is in the on position.

Yep....In all likelyhood, the wheels were turned some as the car was shut down last time. Will the key turn? the motor start? If not, I know what the problem is. Write me, or add to your post here.
If it will start, and if it's parked on an incline, get someone to stand in front of the car (on the down side) and rock the car as you try to get it out of park.

I think should have a little key hole type thing or slot next to the shifter.... put your car key in it and press down while putting your car in to "N" then take the key out to use it to start the car...
hope it works
that's how my Civic used to be I had to do that once or twice....
good luck
