Metaphors are used to explain and attempt to bring to life, the feelings, passions, ups and downs of love, to the uninitiated and unsure. Those who think of love as a mere abstract concept may be able to relate somewhat to a metephor as an explanation.

the existence of metaphor indicates a partial identity between different things - ie on some deep level two things are the same thing

love is the same: seeing identity in apparent difference

just as a clydesdale and a shetland pony are different but the same [horse], so too everything that exists is different only up to a point - after that point they are indifferent or the same

so, eg, brain and brick are very different, but they are both made of atoms, atoms are made of energy [e=mc2], energy cannot be created or destroyed, atoms are full of energy or life - electrons whizz around billions of times a second forever if einstein doesnt get hold of them - energy is the creator, the creator is everything, the creator is energy is love is existence
so brick and brain are not totally different

ultimately everything is energy, love, beauty, divine, infinite, existence, life

we are heavily biassed to seeing difference and neglecting to see sameness - eg, saying the sexes are opposite when they are 99.99% the same - even the genitals are 99% the same

when we learn to see sameness, we see love everywhere - when we feel love, we see it everywhere -

but we need diffeerence so we can see sameness - if there were only sameness, we wouldnt be able to see it, recognise it, experience it - we see it by contrast with difference

difference makes us fear and we hate what we fear

sameness is totally comforting and pleasant

the journey of man is along the line from heavy bias to difference, to seeing sameness in proper proportion, ie from fear to love

there's a strong bond between them, all descriptions of true love never declines to the level of materialistic objects, so it's so close to metaphor, true love have positive psychological effects...the extreme opposit of depression and if one wants to describe this happiness then he'll unconsciously end up using metaphor

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor

The connection for that which is of the Self is the self itself, the simplest expression for this self is "I".

Love is not a thing

Self quote: 'Knowing Love itself is self knowledge that rises above that which was. What was you is now past you, different. But if love is not differentiated in abstraction, then what guide is there for knowing the love from another. It is not enough that you love, but to know what it is as certainly as knowing all other constituents of human essence: psychology.'

Self and Other, Self as Other, Self the Other, Other as Self, Other the Self .....

Metaphor is description for the differentiation and similarity of the two (or more) others descriptions not of the same object species object using concrete description criterion. Usually love for the other is not for giving or known to give pain, but for wont of reciprocation it is known as, by some, love (unacquainted love). Love in its completed and reciprocated form is completely positive, but all in a time, and a time is not eternity, so obviously love itself is not the identity of that new social relation for me, but a potential for a need which itself is needed for complete humanization.

The connection is beauty related to beauty, need to the needed. The Logic.
