may sound stupid but what does it mean for them to scrap my membranes. Should it hurt? And should it start contractions. How soon would it start contractions.

Breaking your water...no it didn't hurt but there was this "whoosh" and I was soaked. It has to be done to get things moving along.

I had this done recently (my daughter was born 8/30) and also had it done with my previous child. Yes it hurts a little during the scraping, but it's only a temporary discomfort. The doctor or nurse or midwife will use their finger to separate the (I think) amniotic sac from the wall of the uterus, which is supposed to send your body a signal that it's time for the baby to start arriving - I'm not entirely sure of the technical details, but from the pregnant person's point of view, it's just a finger you-know-where, poking around for a minute or so, and then hopefully within 1-2 days labor will start. But it doesn't always work, didn't work for me either time. Contractions won't start right away. This is just one way to try to get nature kick started.

Note that this is not the same thing as breaking your water, which is something else the doctor could do in the hospital to get things going as well.

Good luck!!!

It is normal to be one week or even two over due. The date they give you is only an estimated due date. If it is not born yet this can only means that the baby is not done yet. So don't let the doctor hurry it up because he'll miss his vacation, golf game or birthday party.
The membrane is what covers the placenta. After the baby is born, then you give birth to the placenta. This is what has nourished your baby for the nine months he's been in you. It is a beautiful organ filled with nutritious supplements. It is covered with this membrane. This must be a new procedure. I have only heard of this after the baby is born. Just do your research on it and do not let the doctors intimidate you. You are the boss. They work for you. LeMeNo

I think you mean strip your membranes. I had that done with my 1st pregnancy. From what I remember, basically it means they go in and try to strip the bag of water from the cervix. I can't remember it hurting much at all. I compared it to any internal "probing" they might do during late pregnancy when they are checking your cervix for dialation. It didn't put me into labor I don't believe because I went another 4 or 5 days before I delivered.

*** I'm adding this on because a few people here keep saying it means to break your water. No, they don't break your water and don't come anywhere close to doing so. A doctor would never break your water then send you home to see if you go in labor. Like I said, t means they attempt to strip some of your bag away from the cervix.

Scraping the membrane is a way of trying to naturally induce labor. Sometimes even the thought makes a woman go into labor. You will not feel the scraping, as it is on the membrane that holds the water in, but you may feel pressure. You will feel the instrument used to open up your canal, but even that shouldn't hurt.
Once your water is broken, then contractions happen fairly quickly.
Good Luck. It's your body. You can choose to wait it out. No pregnancy goes on forever.
It will happen, so maybe let it happen on its own. 8 days is part of the error factor of &/- 2 weeks, which is given to every woman.

well i had it done twice, i barely noticed, even if you do notice, no it really doesn't hurt. It is usualy followed by a trickle, or a flow of water breaking...and then it is all just a matter of time for the contractions to start, then can set you up with some patocine, but make sure your having an epedural for that..it's kinda painful it heightens the contractions..i was 2 weeks late with all 3 of mine, so just hang in there.

it means to break your waters i had it done and i was allowed gas so i didnt really feel it it was a bit uncomfortable my contractions started quite quick about 45 mins something like that so i would suggest to ask your midwife for gas when they break your waters it makes you more calmer too because if you are worried about you can get tensed up down below good luck

I'm not sure if you are talking about pap smear or did you have an abnormal pap and they are taking tissue from you? Can you clearify that please?
