It's not the child as much as the parents that allow that child to become obese! That child needs help... psychological, medical and therapeutic pus a dietitian and exercise trainer... some discipline, too.
I know a family and I've known them for over7 years and their son outweighs me since I first met him (he was 10 years old and he outweighed me? Goodness, he was so much shorter than me and I'm old enough to be his grandfather!). I spoke at length with the parents but their b/s excuse is always, "What an I do?" and of course, I get so frustrated that I yell at them, "BE THE GODDAMNED PARENTS."

Just like childhood diabetes is a serious issue, childhood obesity is a serious issue that in my opinion, doesn't get enough exposure. If someones child had diabetes, the parents would do whatever it takes to control it. When the child is overweight however, it's seen as something that will just past or in some instances, even "cute". Its a serious disease that requires the utmost care. As for advice for the child, children are extremely intelligent and take constructive criticism better that adults. Sit the child down and tell them they have a serious health problem that if not corrected, can cause a lot of bad things to happen. Reward the child with books when they lose 5lbs or so. Allow the child to chose what vegetables to eat today. Get the child involved with grocery shopping. But the best thing you can do is lead by example. Children mimic their parents. If you eat fast food all day long, then that's the same thing your child is going to do. If the child is being teased at school however, just tell the child to explain to the other children that I'm not fat, I have a health problem and myself and my family are working on everyday. Also, get the teachers and school cook involved to support the child.

I think it is sad and hope their parents help them. A child like this should be reminded that they are beautiful. Point out their best strengths and get them active. Swim, roller blade, ride a bike, etc. And do it with them because they are kids and need the company or they would probably bore and quit.
Don't leave Little Debbies in the house. Replace treats like this and ice cream with apples, grapes, bananas, etc.
