They say that it cannot be recharged or prepaid ..etc. What is the difference ?.One may note that an ordinery telephone instrument (corded or cordless ) does work all right any where . What is the hitch .. technical.. or commercial?

It is obviously technical. All cell phones are coded with their respective numbers to be used only in their countries. I do have a phone infact 2 cellphones bought in US and I need to uncode the number before i could use it in Singapore with my own sim card with local charges. Actually i got it unlock with a local shop in UK. Note: But not all phones shop/ repair shop can uncode the number.

Phones that support the same networks as other countries (often called Tri-Band or Quad-Band) will work when you leave the US, but you need to get the phone "unlocked". This is because most US carriers prevent the phones from being used on other companies' networks. Contact your cell provider for this, or do a search for companies that will do this for you on the internet. There is a charge for it, and there is a risk of breaking your phone, so getting your phone company to do it for you is the best way.

I just took a trip to England, France and Germany and used my Cingular Motorola phone with a local SIM card which I bought in a shop in London. I had a local number in England and made calls for pennies. It was great.

If you are still using the sim card from the US in another country, try checking with your phone company about roaming services.

If you are trying to use a sim from the foreign country, the phone might be locked to the phone company in the US so it won't accept any sim card from any other phone companies.
