they line up about 4 to 7 yards from the line of scrimmage, behind the tackle(s) and ends. in a 4-3 (4 d-linemen and 3 linebackers) they are closer to 6 yards, in a 3-4, they outside linebackers are about 4 yards off, and the inside linebackers close to 6 or 7 yards off

there are different linebackers. the middle linebackers are usually behind the defensive tackles. and the outside linebackers are lined up outside of the defensive tackles.
