You may have went through a water hole and the belt got wet and slipped. I have seen this before, saying you went through water.

sounds like you have an air bubble in one of your lines, or that you have a belt that needs to be tightened up... you can either bleed the power steering system ( big BIG pain in the rear ) or take it to a shop and have them pressure test it... (expensive) check your belts out first and make sure the tension is about the same on all of them

What do you mean by temporarily? Did you add fluid and it started working again? If that's the case it sounds as if you have a leak some where.

If you have a rack@pinion steering syst,I't could perform like you descibed.That would call for a replacement of the unit.Need more info,when,hot or cold?Or is i't random?
