I'm really confused and want to know what degree I would have to get (in Canada) in order to become a doctor.

First you have to graduate from a 4 year university. If you're accepted into a medical school, you get your M.Ed in 3 years, but then you have to your internship before you can practice.

I think Canada is pretty similar to the USA. In the USA to be a physician, you mainly need a degree Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) but there are some other degrees which are similar but which only allow you to practice certain kinds of medicine - like Doctor of Podiatry allows you to work on feet, or Doctor of Osteopathy which is recognized by some states, but not by others. Or, Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine - which is regarded as bogus by some people, and regarded as totally professional by others.

Mostly you need an M.D. degree. To get that degree you have to attend regular college, get the right courses and then get admitted to Medical College and spend 4 years working on the M.D. Also you have to pass some really hard National tests in the USA to be allowed to proceed to the next level. A lot of people want to be Doctors, so the admission to Med School is really competitive.

I will be interested to see if anyone points out any differences between the way this works in Canada vs the US.

ps in the USA an M.Ed is Master of Education - that is a degree that teachers get to be certified to teach elementary school! I think that might be a typo!

well you need about 90 ch of undergrad prerequiste courses, excellent GPA, kick *** MCAT score, Extracurricular activities and lots of volunteering. Or you can go all the 4 yrs of undergrad, BSc. Biology-Chemistry degree I say is your best bet, makes writing MCAT so much easier. And then you apply and go to medical school for 3 -4 yrs. then you do clinical and write a test in order to become a doctor and that's about it. Afterwards you do your residency. Good Luck
