Because by the time you get home and the dog hounds you for the bag, even after you walk him, you forget about the bag and leave it on the counter, during the night the dog gets the bag and there you have it, the doggy bag. LOL

originally, in any restaurant people asked for a doogie bag to take the leftovers home to their dog. thats the way i remember it decades ago!
