Well most likely, if you are getting a new psp from the store, it will be 2.6 firmware maybe? And the firmware means the type of version for the psp, like Windows 98, or Windows XP. But you can update the psp every once in awhile with a thing called network update. It updates to the newest version of psp

The different firmware or "version" numbers show how new the "firmware" is (which is the software that is hard wired into the device, the menus and things)

Normallly patches (downloading code to upgrade your firmware) are a good thing. These patches fix bugs or add new features. Some of the PSP upgrades are like this. For example the firmware 2.0 added a web browser.

When the PSP first came out, it was able to do several extra things that the programmers hadn't anticipated. This allowed users to add programs and software to their PSP that isn't licensed by Sony. This is called "Homebrewing". Homebrewing allowedd PSP users to play SNES games on their PSP for example. Sony didn't like this (due to copyright laws etc) and in each patch there is often code to upgrade a PSP so it is unable to play homebrew programs.

The big issue is that many newer PSP games will not play on the older firmware, in fact some games include firmware updates and will not play until that update has been installed. Once a PSP has been updated it cannot be "rolled back" to an earlier version.

I haven't been following it for a while, but I believe they are able to have homebrew on version 2.0 but no higher. If you are interested in homebrew, If possible you should purchase a firmware 1.5 as it can run homebrew flawlessly.

If you are not interested in homebrew or you wish to use your PSP to play games and watch UMD movies, the firmware number is essentially meaningless, and you can safetly ignore it.

You can still add movies and music and images from your computer to your PSP no matter which version of firmware you have, the numbers are only important for homebrew.

They are different verisons of the "operating system". The psp comes with any of these but you can update them easily via a wireless internet connection or via a data cable.
