I am a limber branch in the wind

My friend is a babbling monkey

My life is an ocean wave

HERE IS A GOOD ONE YOU CAN USE IF YOU LIKE:

My family lives inside a medicine chest:
Dad is the super-size band aid, strong and powerful
but not always effective in a crisis.
Mom is the middle-size tweezer,
which picks and pokes and pinches.
David is the single small aspirin on the third shelf,
sometimes ignored.
Muffin, the sheep dog, is a round cotton ball, stained and dirty,
that pops off the shelf and bounces in my way as I open the door.

You want to compare something to something else. In this case the writer is comparing his life to a river.

My life is like a river,
with rough rapids,
ridged rocks,
and in the end
a smooth flat ocean.

Think what you want to write about. Make a list of the qualities of that thing. Then think of something different that also fits those qualities. Remember the old poem My Love is like a red, red rose? It's one of the most famous love poems http://www.contemplator.com/scotland/redrose.html

Good luck!
