Why were they built to begin with? What purpose did they serve?

Horses scare at a few things. ONe is fire, another is the lost perspective of going over a bridge without a cover and seeing the reflections of the sun off the water.

They served as a pretext for a clapped-out photographer to screw a farmer's wife, so that all and sundry could then go all gooey about how wonderful he was. LOL

Not only were they a good way to get out of the rain when you were traveling, they were a good place for young couples to go and "court."
