I was late to my chemistry class three times (and I mean only 5 minutes late at most each time during the whole quarter, and now, not only has she called my parents, she's also making me write an ESSAY, explaining why tardiness is bad. My dad tried to stand up for me, but she wouldn't let it go. The course starts at 7:45, and my dad won't let me take the subway in the morning or get any rides, so I rely on him to drop me off. Somehow, he's always running late when getting ready, so that just screws me over. Compared to kids who intentionally disrupt class, graffitti bathrooms, fight at school, etc. I'm a straight A student, and I have to write an essay for being LATE. I'll just suck it up and do it, but does the crime *really* justify the punishment? I go to the strictest school. =(

Yes. Life is unfair.
Need to accept it.

You need to tell your dad he is the problem - his inattention to the clock is affecting your grades. Ask him what he is going to do about his problem. (Maybe he should write the essay?) He should not stand up for his own behavior - he is the one who makes you late.

Being late is disruptive to the class, and it's not fair to the other students that you walk in 5 minutes late for whatever reason.

Having said that, I think you should talk with your teacher after class and explain the situation again. Maybe bring in the dean of students or the principal. Perhaps you can change your class schedule to take chemistry at a different period.

I also like the idea of getting your dad up earlier. Try to get your mom involved - she can put some heat on your dad and you will have an ally to get him moving sooner. (Tell him you will call a taxi at his expense if he doesn't get the lead out.)

How easy is it to spin out 400 words take into consideration that your complaint is at least 100 words if not more. I look at lateness as it is desertion meaning if I told you that the ship leaves at 7AM and you show up at 7: 01 and we have left you behind then you are absent without permission and you would be fired. I recommend that you just do it and stop your bitching over a lousy 400 word essay. If you would show up when you are supposed to then all this would not happen. Right?

Try this for one in Europe, we use to get five leather scrap beating on each hand. Writing 400 word essay is nothing compare to what we got here.

It beats detention or a grade reduction.

40 years ago I was late to class ONE time and had to write the entire times table 200 times.

Like you said, suck it up and go on.

But, you really need to get on your Dad about how important being on time is for you.

400 words is nothing really. Just spin the yarn a bit. Explain in details of wat happened that day and how there was actually nothing within reason that you could have done. Then set fire to your teachers house and ask her to write you a 1000 word essay (she's older so more words) on the failure of her fire prevention methods.

Someone is trying to teach you..... appreciate it... think about what 5 minutes is.. my dad is dying from asbestos lung disease, if he loses his oxygen tube, we have 30 seconds to get that mask back on him or he will die. In life, every second matters... we go to school to learn.. you weren't late once, you were late 3 times.. teacher is trying to teach you.. time matters.. write your essay.. :)

I sympathize with you, but welcome to real life! There are many unfair things that will happen to you during your life and you're better off learning how to roll with the punches now. Just do what you have to do and go on with the program.

It's not unfair. And because you ARE an A student she wants you to become responsible.
