well i work in the tree industry, and i can tell you that every time i have felled a tree in the woods, or anywhere else for that matter, it has always made a sound. i have also seen animals react do to the sound a tree is making when it falls. so even if there are no people there to hear it, the animals can attest to it. and lastly, i think it is more the landing of the tree that actually makes the noise rather than the falling!!!

Yes. There are always creatures of some sort living in all areas of any given forest. Odds are there is a spider within four feet of you at this very moment, not to mention the billions upon billions of mites & other tiny insects that exist just about everywhere on the planet. And these creatures can hear a tree fall.

Yes. Based on our understanding of acoustics, a tree falling in the woods would make a sound regardless if anyone was there to hear it. Can it be proved, no. But, if one argues that it does not make a sound, you will need to come up to a theory as to why it does not. The argument that it would make a sound is well tested, and has withstood scientific testing.

Sound is produced by the movement of air. It is compressed at various intensities by the movement of a solid object through it. A violin string is a solid form which vibrates, it is the compression and subsequent moving of the air which produces what our ears pick up and what we call sound.

A tree falling in the forest is compressing and moving a hell of a lot of air. The sound exists regardless of there being an ear nearby to catch it.

That's what I think.

Trees don't fall in a Forrest, they fall in forests. And yes, they still make sounds. If a chicken crosses the road and nobody or thing saw it, is it still on the other side?

Well, how is sound produced? If the waves propagate somewhere, there will be sound. Now, in the vacuum of outer space, nobody would hear it because there's no media to propagate the wave.

So, if nobody hears it, it still made a sound!

Yes. The Sounds (vibrations in the air) are created.
Not having anyone around to "hear" it dosn't make the actual sound vibrations vanish.
