First of all it doubled the size of the country and created countless opportunities for the economy of the united states to expand and grow.
Second of all it went against all that Thomas Jefferson (the then president) said he stood for. Jefferson believed in extremly limited government. As well he believed that the government had no authority to spend money to increase the size of the country. However, the economic advantages to having not only New Orleans as well as much of the Northwest was too big a prize for even Jefferson to pass up.
