Try this memory tool.
Write the first letter of each of these words across the page:
"Kitchen Helpers Don't Make Delicious Cookie Mix."

On your page, you will have "K H D M D C M."
They stand for the metric measurements:
Kilometers, Hectometers, Decameters, Meters, Decimeters, Centimeters, Milimeters

For Liters, use "Kitchen Helpers Don't LIKE Delicious Cookie Mix."

For grams, use "Kitchen Helpers Don't GULP Delicious Cookie Mix."

So for mL in a Liter, you will have "K H D L D C M" written on your page.
Put the 1 in the L column. Then put zeros in the other columns.
You will get 1000. So... 1 liter = 1000 mL

For mg in a kg, put the 1 in the K column, then put zeros in the other columns.
You will get 1000000. So... 1kg= 1,000,000 mg

Try it on your own with km.

m (in combination) = milli = 1/1000
m = meter
1 mL = 1000th of a liter = 1 cu cm
kilo = x 1,000 (kilometer, kilobyte, kilogram)
1mg = 1/1000th of gram (4C water) = 1 cu mm
1,000,000 mg in a kg
1 kg = 1,000 g (gram)

Prefixes from Latin:

deci = 1/10th
centi = 1/100th
milli = 1/1,000th
micro = 1/Millionth
nano = 1/Billionth (American number system)

Prefixes from Greek:

deka = times 10
hekta = x 100
kilo = x 1,000
mega = x Million
Giga = x Billion (American)
Tera = x Trillion (American)
Peta = x 1,000 Trillion (American)
