You sacrifice to improve one's life if you are willing to put off todays pleasure for a greater benefit tomorrow.

One of the best examples: It may take you 10 years to buy a house with cash if you saved up by living in a tent and ate ramen noodles for those 10 years. That's sacrifice. OR you can borrow money and live in a new house today BUT take 30 years to pay it off because 2/3rds of your payment is usually interest expense.

Now in 10 years, the tent dweller buys and owns a brand new house for cash and can now use his income to buy other things, like a new car. The person who borrowed to buy his house now lives in a 10 year old house and cannot afford a new car because he is still paying off what he owes for his house for 20 more years.

The tent dweller improved his life by sacrificing, the borrower lived for today and is still struggling to make ends meet.

Teaches you how to live a less self centered life. You learn to put others before yourself. There's a wonderful sense of satisfaction that you get when you put yourself out there for someone. When it's something that's easy to do it doesn't mean as much to you as when you really had to give of yourself.
