Stormy,
We had the same problem a few years back and truthfully no matter how clean we kept our apartment or how much we bombed and laid out powder and traps the roaches kept coming back. We were confused at first and then figured out that it wasn't really our fault. If the people around you are unclean and not bombing and everything as well then the roaches will continue to return. What's worse is they will become immuned to the sprays and traps. I had a friend of mine who stayed in a dorm at college and the roaches there were huge. Her mother told her to get bay leaves and crumble them up all along the base boards and then leave some in the windowsills, the closets and drawers. She went one step and made little pouches that could sit out on top of the counters and for some reason the roaches stayed away. Maybe they don't like the smell of bay leaves.

Here is a recipe for roach buffet.....take shortening, bacon grease, sugar, peanut butter, butter, syrup, jelly, cheese, anything you can find that you can mix up into a conglomeration.
Then buy some "boric acid" at any store by the bug spray and do not breathe it as you mix it into the stuff you just mixed up - you can add water or milk to make it mixable.
After you get it all mixed up, put it behind the kitchen range, and under the sink in the back corner, and behind the refrigerator, etc. NO PLACES THAT KIDS OR ANIMALS WILL BE ABLE TO GET INTO IT! Just put about 1/8 cup in each place. On coffee can plastic lids or on foil, etc.
Just leave it there and pretty soon all the roaches will be gone. It works better than poison that you have to spray on everything.
They say that bay leaves work too, but they would be prohibitively expensive! Good luck.

I would throw out the sofa etc. bomb before and spray the only problem is that the little guy is going to be teething and with all the pesticide. Not a good thing. Throw away the card board don't use it to move either they like to lay eggs in cardboard. I HATE ROACHES. you can also use Boric acid powder. I would leave everything and run like you heard voices telling you to GET OUT. go to a frinds house take a shower and start life over.

The two most effective methods to killing cockroaches are Burning down the building and squashing them with your shoe.(I'm dead serious).
There are more than 1 kind of cockroaches. The German Cockroach is immune to all chemicals known to man. The American Cockroach places a close second. If you use spray chemicals on roaches the whole building needs fumigated, not just a few rooms where they migrate for a while. Even if you kill any you can be guaranteed that any of the kids that the exterminators missed are going to be immuned.
Since fumigating has failed, your best bet is to move. Not just for your health, but for your safety.
If you don't want to move then prepare to loose a couple of sewer rats into your apartment to control the roach population.

I also had an apt. that couldn't be cleansed of the evil critters. They seemed to take on an immunity to all the sprays & poisons & some even acted like they were on steroids!!! Then I met a lady who was 74 at the time (20 years ago) who said Bay leaves were what her mother had always told her. You can get them at the grocery store or health food store. They are used for cooking soups & stews. Put them under you couch cushions, between the mattress & box springs, in pillow cases, all the kitchen cupboards... anywhere you can think of that the kids won't find. It really does work!

One of the best things is borate, a naturally-occurring mineral that is non-toxic to humans and pets. Sprinkle some of this in a line along baseboards or wherever roaches are seen and eventually it will kill them. This is much safer to use than poison sprays and better for your environment, too, especially since you have young children. You can actually eat a spoonful of this stuff and suffer no ill effects, but if you gorge yourself on it you might experience some gastric distress. Much safer than poison sprays.
One advantage of the borate is they will not know they are being killed. Unlike a spray, which they can sense and flee, they will walk all over borate and die an ignorant death.

Rev. Steven is right Boric Acid Powder!! Since you are pregnant please have someone else do this... Boric acid costs like 2.00 at the dollar store and it will say boric acid right on it. What you gotta do is put the stuff everywhere there is water, like behind your washer, your refrigerator(yes there is water there), under your kitchen and bathroom sink. I had them REALLY REALLY bad once and i made a paste out of it and put in the cracks of my kitchen cabinets making sure i wiped out ANY of the residue also they were gone within a week. Seriously i had them so bad they were in my alarm clock and behind every picture, they were everywhere, then i did this and have never had a problem since oh you also want to put it behind your baseboards of your apartment to keep them next door and not in yours. Good Luck and congrats on the new baby.

If you have carpet, take boric acid, (you can get it at Home Depot), and sprinkle it into your carpet. You can use a broom or rake to get it deep into the fibers. Then vacuum it up. The boric acid suffocates the eggs and when the bugs walk on it, they digest it and die. I did this in my home and never had bug problems for years! It really works....
