The engine light just turned on and I'd like to get the codes to begin troubleshooting it. I know how to get them off of a honda and I figure there must be a way to get them off of a VW too?

Go to Advanced auto parts! The have an obd2 scanner there and they'll pull the codes for free. And I beleive they can reset the codes too after you fix whatever it is that's causing the light to come on

You need an OBD II scanner, dfesigned to read all engine fault codes for all vehicles 1995 and later. They aren't cheap, so here's option #2. Go to a reputable car parts place, like Discount auto Parts, and ask if they read your car for you. They can tell what's wrong, and make recommendadtions. If the vehicle still has a warrantee, or things get worse, and you have to take it to a dealer, and they find out you tried to fix it yourself, they're gonna kick you to the curve. Good luck

rent a scan tool and that will show you what the computer is reading and show u wuts rong with it. then fix it and it should go off, hopefully but not all the time and it might be worth leaving it off because it might cost hella to turn it off by bringing it in somewhere and even if they get it to turn off it still might come on later on down the road again so.
