Very bad, tampons are a risk to your vaginal health no matter how long you leave them in for because they prevent your vagina from cleaning itself, absorb discharge that can lead to vaginal splitting as well as irritation, give bacteria a pores area to multiply upon, also with commercial tampons there are added risks from the materials used making them more absorbent and chemicals that can irritate, effect bacterial balance in the vagina and enter into your blood stream. Tampons are not hygienic, as someone has already pointed out essentially you are leaving decomposing material, as well as bacteria and dirt, within your vagina.
The longer you leave a tampon in the greater the risk of infection, vaginal splitting, chemical exposure and of course toxic shock syndrome. Using organic tampons such as Natracare, sponge tampons such as Jade & Pearl or homemade tampons limit your risks because they are made from natural materials and do not contain chemicals.

The only menstrual options you can leave in for that length of time are menstrual cups, because they don't prevent vaginal functions and don't give bacteria a place to multiply as tampons do. Options such as bell-shaped cups, diaphragms used as menstrual cups or softcups can all be left in for up to 12 hours without risk, as well as used when you are not menstruating, at night and during activities such as swimming or even penetrative penis to vaginal sex if using a softcup or diaphragm as menstrual cup.

Ideally, you should wear a tampon (any tampon) for about 4-8 hours max and I've heard 4-6. If you want to fuss with this stuff less often, consider a menstrual cup which is safe to leave in for 12 hours. If you definitely want to use a tampon then use an all cotton non bleached tampon like natracare or seventh generation or eco yarn or organic essentials, which are safer than regular tampons which often have rayon and whatnot.

Yes, you should not wear any kind of tampon for longer than 8 hours at the maximum. If you usually have moderate to heavy bleeding, you should change it out every 4-6 hours. Leaving a tampon in for extended periods of time increases your chances of aquiring toxic shock syndrome, which can be fatal.

YES! Never leave a single tampon in for a very long time. There is a very serious blood infection that can develop from it. Women have died from this.
Change your tampon probably every 4 hours.

yes. even though the box may say "can be worn up to 8 hours" that's not even a good idea. four hours is basically the max...but if you go over a bit it's ok as long as you don't do it a lot and don't go over 8 hours. sometimes you can't help but go over 4 hours cuz you just can't get the time to take care of it. But 12 hours is bad....that can cause TSS (toxic shock syndrome) which can kill you. I don't mean to scare you or anything but that's the truth.

I have gone to bed with one in and not taken it out until noon next day but I am not saying that is good. I have been leaving them in a little too long for the last 13 years and had no bad results, no infections nothing. BUT u are not suppose to so I would try to go bythe box and not leave it for more than 8 hours.

I used to do that until I got really sick one time. I'm not sure if it was because of the tampon or not, but I never used one again for light flow. If your flow is that light just wear a thin pad.

Yes. The discharge from your uterus is dead tissue which is breaking down or to put it in other words - rotting. The inside of your vagina is warm and moist which makes it an excellent area for bacteria to grow very quickly. Leaving a tampon in for 12 hours is like leaving a piece of rotting flesh inside of you and encouraging it to grow. Don't do it.
