shin splints are very painful and are actually when the muscle starting to tear away. They are very common when first starting to run and you 1) push too hard and 2) do not stretch out well enough before and after your run.

The easiest way to treat them is not to run.

I used to get them and went to physical therapy for it. They had me trace the alphabet in the air with my toes. It is something you can do anytime you are sitting down. I did this a lot and my legs would hurt afterward but eventually the shin splints went away. (I did take some time off from running to let them heal also)

the force of the impact on the ground leads to slight sepparation/tearing of the tibialis anterior from the bone that it attaches to. like a sprain. usually this is a sign of a need for new and better fitting shoes. runners need to replace shoes often to reduce injury and strains. try an elyptical trainer when you have a flare up. some are more prone to this than others.

teh only real way to cure this is to rest for a long time.
i play basketball and used to always get em
its when the muscle or ligaments pull away from the bone
(or something like that)
i only get em though every winter during basketball season

Sounds like you need to stop running for a while to get them to heal and then start again slowly and do proper warm ups and stretches
