thanks all for answering. I was actually asking for my husband - he is already well in to his career, has a Masters degree and everything - but his passion always was to be a detective, so I wanted to encourage him. I don't care about taking a major pay cut, I want him to feel fulfilled. But I don't know if he would drop everything and work the beat, so that Maybe he night have a chance of making detective.

Yes, it is a promotion. There is a wide variety of fields for a detective. Your best bet for quick promotion and a broad range of studies is in a large city.

Being a detective requres more schooling plus,experence as being a cop.

yeah, most of the time you work your way up from the streets...promotions most of the time Detectives are the rank of atleast sgr. (at least around here)
