basically during thee regular season you have th Al league and the Nl league with 3 divisions in each making 6 divisions. the winner of each leagues goes into a knock out competition. the wild card league is split into AL and NL with the winner of each section joining the other 6. so you have 8 teams with 4 winners of those series. the 4 winners will go to the next phase of series with the 2 winners going for the world series finale. as for the astro's not a chance, this year belongs to the Yankees.

In both leagues (American and nationwide) there are 3 divisions. For the playoffs, the team with the acceptable record in each branch receives a playoff spot. of those 3, the team with the acceptable record receives the #a million seed, the team with the second one acceptable record receives the #2 seed, and the third acceptable record receives the #3 seed. as well to those 3 communities is a wild card team. it really is the team with the acceptable record who did not win a branch, and they get the #4 seed. So the wild card team (#4 seed) performs the #a million seed interior the first round and the #2 seed performs the #3 seed. Now, issues can get slightly complicated. Say the wild card team and the #a million seed are from an analogous branch. The MLB has a rule that particular same branch communities won't be able to play one yet another interior the first round. subsequently the #a million seed ought to play the #3 seed and the #2 seed ought to play the #4 seed.

The 3 division winners of each league go to the playoffs. Then the team with the highest record of all of the rest of the teams in their league wins the Wild Card.
The Astros have to win every single one of the rest of their games, but even if they do, that doesn't guarantee that they will win the Wild Card if the teams ahead of them continue to win. Basically, it will take nothing short of a miracle. I am also an Astros fan, and I am just as heartbroken about this season as you are. Sigh...

Basically what the fellow above me said... you have 3 division winners (East, West, Central) After those three division winners, whichever team in the league has the most wins gets the wild card slot. As of now... for the Houston Astros to win the wildcard they would have to win AT LEAST 3/4 of their last games, and hope everyone ahead of them loses about the same amount.

The two teams with the best records in their league(national and American) but did not win their division(east, cetral, west), makes it to the playoffs.
With the three division leaders the wild card team makes it 4 teams from each league playing in the first round of the playoffs for a total ot eight teams in the postseason.
The teams with the best records in their respective leagues play against the wild card teams of their league (except teams from the same division CANNOT play each other in !st round)
Houston Astros need to have the best record of any 2nd place (in division) team in the National League. Do the math to figure out what Astros have to do to get it.

The Wild Card goes to the team with the best record that did not win their division.
The Astors are currently 6.5 games behind the leader and have 6 teams ahead of them. The odds of them making the playoffs are about 1-10,000.

Easiest way to put it: the wild card slot goes to the best 2nd place team in the league.
