Emo is short for emotional. It refers to a group of people who are sort-of like goths, but less hard core and more emotional. They often write in journals or sit at home and cut their wrists.

it's short for emotional. It's usually used to stereotype kids who go around constantly depressed, slitting their wrists, dressing in all black, and listening to depressing "emo" music. (a variety of hardcore punk) Not to be confused with Goths.
