The Mississippi-Missouri river valley is a phisical region. A big one, compared to the Isle of Skye, but they are both physical. You could see them from a space ship, if there were no clouds. They were both there before people came to them. Clultural regions are regions where people of the same general type live; Amish country, Navaho country, Eskimo terriroty, the Cajun region of Lousiana. The Cajuns eat better and dance more than the Amish, by the way. Cultural regions have one predominate language, religion and ethnic heritage, usually.

I physical region would be an area defined by certain geographical features features. For example, an island would be defined by the ocean surrounding it. A cultural region would be a region that is defined by the customs of the people living in it. For example, a portion of Louisiana would be cajun country even though there is no geographical barrier.

First and foremost, it is a continent with well-defined geographical borders. That makes it a physical region. On the other hand, on many aspects, the reference goes beyond the concept of geographical borders. The debate goes on about such countries as Turkey that straddles two continents on whether the particular country is "European" or not.
