I have always felt awkward in these instances. I never know what to do. I always say "I'm so sorry!" or "That's awful! I'm so sorry...". What else can you do?

nothing! im the same way i asked my doctor if i was ok to not feel awful, when bad things happen, he said its not that i dont care, its the Part of showing feelings that just wont come out

you say you are so sorry and offer to do anything you can... thats it, just the fact that you are available is enough. if they do ask for something and it is in your power to do it than do it. most of the time all you have to do is show you care.

Console them, offer to talk, tell them you understand how hard it is for them to go through this. Tell them that you'll be ther for them and help them get through this. Spend some time with them over the next couple of days.

Just say I'm sorry and offer sympathy or support, and ask them if they need anything of if there's anything you can do.

Just listen. Oftentimes, there are not words to be said. Just provide comfort and a sincere ear.
