Squeeze would be my choice. Intelligent lyrics, excellent songwriters and good musicians. They had a few hits but never attained the level that the music should have taken them to

I'd argue Joy Division on this one. Their music is NOW accepted as the most wonderful, beautifully crafted and influential music in the world, but it was not so.
The band often had to pay for their own recording due to their not having a record company to start off. The recording was done in spurts, which makes up for the grand majority of JD albums which have these uncompleted and non-album pieces on.
Few of JD's concerts were ever done outside of Manchester, with 2 in Birmingham and one in Paris. Performances were often problematic- small venues, the equipment being too big...
Then came the death of Ian Curtis, just before the American tour, put a stop to any more. It is really only this which ensured JDs place as the ultimate tragic band, and put albums such as Unknown Pleasures into recording history, although it had received much praise when released. We shall never know if Ian Curtis could have topped UNknown Pleasures.
A close second is Alphaville. I've heard quite a bit of their stuff, but only one album actually had any success in the UK, Big In Japan. Shame nothing became of it...:-(

Yeah,
My old band, Rough Justice.
We had the potential to be bigger than the biggest thing ever.
But we were all members of the armed forces at the time, and all got posted to different locations around the world.
I still have CD copies of the album we recorded.

Well I guess you could lump Status Quo in this catagory. Although they still have a huge following in Britain despite what the Rock media would have you believe and an even biggwer following in Europe, especially Holland and Germany, Status Quo have had 3 good cracks at America now and failed dismally each time, unlike the Stones who started around the same time as Quo.
Many fans think that this was largely due to them releasing the wrong singles in the States. Whatever it was Status Quo despite their size and wealth have never been as popular in America as they are and consequently lost the opportunity to make it Really Big!

They were on the soundtracks for Scream 3 and Heavy Metal 2000 before thier first cd was in stores, but broke up before thier 2nd album was made. Great band, cool guys, glad I saw them 6 times before they split.

Cry Before Dawn - they were an Irish band from Co. Wexford. I thought they were brilliant but they never made it outside Ireland and split up some years ago. Also Transvision Vamp were pretty good. They had a few hits and then just disappeared.

Any band that mainstream media acknowledges is sucessful. There are thousands that are unsigned, really good that we never hear of. Just try listening to some random shoutcast music station...lots of junk, but some gems in amongst them as well..
