I've seen three horrible adaptations that I thought were absolutely terrible:

"Watchers", based on Dean Koontz's best book ever

"The Lords of Discipline", based on an excellent novel by Pat Conroy

"Dune" (the Kyle McLachlan one) based on the Frank Herbert classic

I thought "Misery" was a pretty good film adaptation, but good ones seem to be very rare.

You can't really compare a book to a film even when they tell the same story because the reader/veiwer experiences a book and a film differently. If you're reading its a very personal thing that requires imagination as well as much effort. Where as with a film the veiwer is passive and experiences the imagination of the films director. If you do read a book and then see the film, or vice-versa, you should approach the second version with an open mind or you will inevitably be disapointed. This is not always the case. I read "I'm Not Scared" then saw the film and loved them both. This does not take into account bad film making. (Captain Corelli is a good example!)

The Lord of the Rings movies were pretty bad. A lot of people say that the movies needed to cut out certain parts (Tom Bombadil) in order to keep the movie to a decent time. But why make a movie of a book that is clearly too long for the big screen? I just don't think they should do things like this. The books were great, the movies were good movies, but terrible lord of the rings movies. Why does Hollywood need to ruin everything? Now all the kids growing up won't ever read these great books, they'll just watch the movie. I also thought that the movie of George Orwell's 1984 was pretty poorly done.

I Robot, Just about any of the Stephen King books turned movies, The DaVinci Code, and the last Harry Potter movie.

All of these movies would have been a LOT better, had I not read the books first.

Da Vinci Code - The film is toooo long and doesn't have the pace that the book has.
Sorry to say that many others in the cinema on opening night said the same.

I saw "The Running Man," and later read the short story.

I'd have liked to have seen the film based more closely on the short story.

Other disappointments include: John Varney's "Air Raid", William Gibson's "Johnny Mnemonic" and, oh, so many others.

Memoirs of a Geisha. The book was fantastic, but I found the movie to be lacking the depth and intensity of the book. I'm sure anybody who had a negative view of the fiom would change their mind about the storyline once they read the novel.
