Well, if you have a big budget then Peachtree is the top of the line accounting software. For taxes, H&R Block's Tax Cut is great (I use that and it's reasonably priced), although Intuit's software is popular too.

You will need forms also, like Purchase Order forms and invoices. You can get a lot of these for free from Microsoft's website (office templates section), and you can print these forms with Microsoft Word or OpenOffice (which is free).

Do you plan on having a website? I use LunarPages.com and I've been happy with them. It's like $100 a month and it wasn't too tough setting up a half-way decent looking website.

If you are talking about accounting software I would suggest Quickbooks. It is flexible and easy to use for non-accountant types. They have preset chart of accounts for many different types of businesses that allow you to get started right away and still allow you to tweak it for your personal needs. The software is very reasonably priced so that a small start up can afford it. You can find it at Staples or similar office supply stores.

simply accounting is a great sm business program, lets you track, invoice purchase, pay bills, inventory, etc
